Road Trips to Orlando on the Rise

With gas prices slowly declining, families are getting back on the road this Summer.

The AAA Auto Club projected that 34.8 million Americans would travel 50 miles or more from home during the Memorial Day weekend alone. That number is an increase of 1.2 percent from the 34.3 million Americans who AAA estimates took a trip for Memorial Day in 2011 and gives a good insight into the 2012 Summer travel season.

With so much to do and see in Orlando, many families will make the city their summer travel destination. AAA Travel Agency has listed Orlando as the top summer vacation destination for 2012. AAA has also identified I-95 as one of the top 10 most traveled highways between Florida and Georgia for Summer travel.

To help you choose the best times of day to travel, as well as the easiest and least congested routes, check out the Florida Department of Transportation's 511 Traveler Information System. By making use of this too, you will be able to see up to date information about accidents, heavy traffic areas and construction on Florida's highways.

The 511 Traveler Information System can be accessed by calling 511 from your cell phone or visiting www.FL511.com. A 511 app can also be downloaded on iTunes and you can even follow 511 on Twitter. The interactive website gives you the option to create your own account and customize your travel route.

In addition to being aware of the best travel routes, the organization MADDhas issued their top tips for safe driving.

1)    Plan a safe way home. Arrange a sober ride home, or offer to be the sober designated driver.

2)    Wear a seat belt. Seat belt usage is one of the best ways to stay safe on our roadways.

3)    Don't call or text. Any form of impaired driving poses a serious threat to those on the road.

4)    Slow down. Respect all posted speed limits.

5)    Be aware. Pay attention to other drivers on the road and avoid those driving erratically.

As an added bonus, Orlando's gas prices average in the range of $3.30 - $3.40 per gallon, more than .30 cents below the national average of $3.72, making Orlando a great travel choice to kick off the Summer.
